A high powered eyepiece, the 5mm Orion Stratus Wide-Field is perfect for detailed views of the moon and planets. The optics are fully multi-coated giving you bright, sharp, high contrast images, and the 68-deg field of view provides a wide vista.
I used this on my 6" reflector to view Mars at 300X. I was blown away. I could see its polar ice cap and some other features on the surface of Mars. Without the 2X Barlow, 150X is simply beautiful when looking at nebula like Orion. I REALLY recommend this eyepiece.
The AstroView 6 is a great telescope for the intermediate viewer. The manual slow motion knobs track objects or add an optional EQ3 DC drive to the mount to power the scope electronically. A good size telescope for planetary and deep sky viewing.
I would consider going for the 8"/10" dobs if I was a little more thorough in my research, especially since they deliver more aperture for roughly the same cost. Then again, having an EQ mount is quite nice, not to mention shows off the telescope a lot more (not that that should really influence your purchase). However, I gotta say that this has performed exceedingly well for me. It's ridiculous what this thing can do. I'm continuously amazed at what it can deliver. I'm in Canada, where it's minus 20 deg and that doesn't stop me simply because the images returned are breathtaking. Thanks Orion!
The perfect textbook for the Astronomy hobby, only more interesting than most textbooks! Nightwatch discusses equipment used in the hobby, finding objects in the night sky, and a whole section on photographing the sky with your telescope.
This is a must have. This book covers EVERYTHING! Telescopes (and all their possible accessories and uses), Sky Charts (also teaches you how to find everything), Advice on purchasing, Light Pollution, The Cosmos, some mythology, covers most prominent Nebulae, Stars and Galaxies etc., Everything about our own Solar System, Photography, Etc. Trust me, I have many astronomy books, none are this comprehensive and catered for your needs. This will get an beginner going in no time and would certainly teach a lot of new things for the experts.

I was blown away with the quality of the image when pointed at the moon and Orion's nebula. Even in -25 degree Celsius, it performed extremely well with no dew/condensation issues. I can't find a single negative thing about the telescope. If I could change one thing, however, it would be the instructions. I only wish they would be more explicit either in terms of language or pictures. If you're not a first time user, however, this shouldn't be an issue. This telescope is a lot of bang for your buck and I highly recommend it for noobs and avid star-gazers alike. Thank you Orion!
