8" f/4.9 OTA review

The 8" OTA survived shipping even though the box had been dropped on its end and one of the foam packing rings was broken. The scope only needed to be re-collimated. The workmanship is very good and it has a nice appearance. I tested the optics out on double star 52 Orionis (6m/6m-1.1" separation) and it split the star with darkness between the diffraction disks on a night of pretty good seeing. The views of the moon are crisp and bright at 300x. The Orion Nebula is fantastic! I was most concerned about the resolution of the optics on a scope in this price range, because I do a lot of double star observing, but the resolution is excellent. I'm getting used to the 2" Crayford focuser. I guess I might wish it had a little more resistance, but I seem to have gotten used to it over time. The scope is a bit Persnickety when it comes to staying in collimation especially when handled. But then after, all it is an open Newtonian reflector. The 3 spring loaded screws, circle on the center of the mirror, and the dot from the collimating eyepiece make the task of collimating quite easy. I am real happy with the OTA and feel it was a good buy for the money.
