The Orion XT4.5 telescope is perfect for a beginner. It's a compact Dobsonian that shows hundreds of objects in much more detail than a 60mm refractor (a classic beginner telescope). The sturdy mount with grip knob allow for easy maneuvering.

1st, the packaging saved this baby. The outer box and innner box were damaged in transit but the scope was still in perfect shape. I had to do a little colmination as it had obviously been abused on its way to me but I was able to handle that with a little trial and error (this is my first true scope beyond the basic toys at normal retailers). The first night out gave us some great views of the tiny sliver of a moon that was out there for the ten minutes it was out before it disappeared behind the trees. I used the 13% moon filter and it made a huge difference in detail. On to Jupiter as it was the only thing left in the sky that I, as a true amateur really know about so far. Beautiful shot of the cloud bands as well as FIVE MOONS!! Awesome! My 7 1/2 year old was pumped!! Did I mention that the light polution where I live is awful? I am back to order the 2x Barlow so we can see even more.
Pros: great price, great scope, easy to assemble, great packaging
