The Orion Intelliscope to PC RS-232 Connector Cable allows you to connect your IntelliScope Object Locator to a serial port on your personal computer so you can use astronomy software to control your Orion Dobsonian IntelliScope.
Once I got it connected to my Macbook, Starry Night Pro and figure out that I had to do the two star alignment on the Intelliscope controller simultaneously it worked fantastically. While the intelliscope does a great job on its own it's fantastic to be able to locate an object of interest in Starry and push the scope to it. There just aren't enough objects I like to observe in the Intelliscope that I know by cat numbers yet.
I hVe. Warning to Mac users and a suggestion for Orion though. Finding the correct serial to usb pigtail was tough. Don't bother trying to find one on newegg, just go down to Best Buy and get the Dynex. Orion, why not just make a straight to usb cable and add some length to it? Fixing those two minor issues would have made this a 5/5 for me. The only other suggestion I have is to make Starry Night read the encoder output without the intelliscope controller to make things easier but that may need to be brought up with the software author. That or offer an encoder decoder with cable instead of the full intelliscope controller as it is. Do you really need both if you're using Starry Night or some other application like it?
Favorite viewing location: Ccausey Reservoir near Ogden, UT
Favorite object to observe: Jupiter, Andromeda
Pros: ease of use once you learn it, fantastic with starry night, better than just an intelliscope
Cons: mac compatibility (apple's fault really, cable length, adaptor required, two star alignment reqires both at the same time
