The Orion SteadyStar Adaptive Optics Guider eliminates tracking errors far more effectively than regular autoguiding. Overcome your mount's periodic error resulting in sharper, smaller stars. It makes even a modest mount perform more effectively!
The basic functionis performed very well. The software is simpel but easy to use and adequate for most uses. The guiding is performed very well. There are also quite a lot of assesories that comes with it which is nice. The pick-off prism and guide camera focus mechanism however, is of too poor quality for such an expencive unit. Also one of the assessories was missing on delivery and one part of the focusing mechanism was broken (but quickly replaced by OPT). And the mechanical quality of threads on the back and front is ok as long as you use the included assessories but not always so if you plan to use some other screw-on equipment. Finaly the software does not alow for controle from an other program such as TheSky or MaxIm which should have been an abvious requirement. And there is no scriptable commands as far as I know so you can't automate the procedures in any way. These two later drawbacks might be eliminated with software up-dates but will they? Also the manual states that differnet optical windows should be available and they are not. Finally, the suport from ORION has been extremly poor. 80% of all corespondance is not answerd at all and the remaining 20% is answerd by people that seem to know nothing at all about theri products and are unable to explain or take iniciatve to eliminate or lessen your problems. But as I said, the main function of the unit is performed well. /Magnus
